Until recently, I had received letters from him, but have heard nothing for about 3 or 4 years. Does anyone have information they could give me? John would be about 96 years old now. I really would appreciate hearing from someone. I travel a lot and consequently my etchings are almost all travel-related. For many years I have worked on a large series about the islands around Africa, which is why, in 1988, I visited Ascension, Saint Helena as well as Tristan da Cunha aboard the RMS. (The etchings I made about these islands adorn the interior of the New RMS and can also be seen at www.sthelena.se/art/rolf.htm. or at www.weijburg.nl) I still have a keen interest in Saint Helena and her dependencies and have been a member of this list right from the start. The reason for me writing now is one of postal interest. For over 25 years now, I have been working on a world-wide postal project called "Inviting the World at Home". In this project I have been trying to receive a postcard ( all similar in size and material)sent from every territory in the world that is surrounded by international borders or has it's own postal administration.( So, not only from independent countries but also from exclaves, colonies, overseas territories and more). I now have received almost 400 of these cards, sent from as many different countries and territories in the world, and together they form a complete survey of all the world's postal links to the Netherlands. At the moment I am working on a book that will depict all 400 or so cards together with postal images and sometimes stories from the territories these cards were sent from. A formidable task, but I'm well on the way, and the idea is to have the book ready at the end of 2007.. Through the years I have collected lots and lots of postal photographs, either taken by myself or had from friends, or through the Internet, and I now have a very considerable collection of pictures of the world's postboxes, post offices, post men and postal vehicles. While I was on Saint Helena, I have made a few photo's of the Post Office, but unfortunately they aren't very good. Could anyone on this list provide me with some better photographs of the post office, and possibly of the postal workers, of the local postal vehicle, in short: of any "postal activity" on Saint Helena? ( Maybe someone has a nice series of photographs of the offloading of mail from the RMS? (just dreaming):-) Of course your photographs, if used in my book, will bear your name as the photographer. I sincerely hope someone can help! Thanks very much in advance. With best regards from the Netherlands, Rolf Weijburg -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... My reference to him suggests he was an army captain and may have been the officer in charge at some stage during Napoleon's exile there but then says "there is no evidence to support this", just that it was a rumour about him in his village when he returned home to Yorkshire.. I have checked some of my other books but he is not listed but in some family correspondance he was writing to the Balcombe family who were on the Island which suggests he could welll have been there. Would love to know where to look! Many thanks Caroline Gaden -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Will this help? I have also written an article on the Tin Can Mail drop from the Pendennis Castle in May of 1968, which has been published in the "South Atlantic Chronicle" (the journal of the St. Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha Philatelic Society) which may be of interest, if you would like to see the text - there are also photographs available of the event. I tried to catch some information about Longwood House after his death in 1821. Can anybody tell me who took care of Longwood House? I of cause know that it was given to France in 1858, but what happened before to Longwood House? Was it a museum? And can anybody tell me what had happened to The Briars after the Balcombes left? If someone has more information for me, please write to arezoo@arezoo.de or post your answers here.
