Subject: Reception in Washington, DC

Greetings,
Hearing you pretty well here in Washington. There is a
little bit of buzz-saw interference, but a strong signal.
The buzz-saw gives me two choices, either I listen on my Sony
2010, which does a mediocre job of clarifying the SSB
and passes all the buzz saw through, or I listen on my
National HRO-60, which does a great job on the SSB, and
allows me to passband null the buzzsaw, but which also picks
up every damn bit of stray interference from my computer.

Congratulations for getting me to turn on my National again.
I've pretty much fallen away from DXing, and just use the
Sony for listening. But R. St. Helena Day has induced me to
warm up the National again (which has the effect of warming
the entire apartment once all those tubes start glowing <g>).
Time to switch off the computer and go back to listening.

Thanks for running this annual event.

Subject: Our St.Helena-Day-Camp
From: kwfr.ge@t-online.de (Ulrich Schnelle)

Dear friends,
this eMail comes to you from the german DX-club
"Kurzwellenfreunde Rhein/Ruhr" (KWFR) at Gelsenkirchen, in
the federal country of North-Rhine-Westphalia, which is
situated in the mid-western part of Germany. (The cities of
Dusseldorf, Essen, Dortmund are not far from us...)

As you may have heard from other sources, our club offers on
Sunday 26th October a special "St.Helena-Fieldday", some kind
of a short one-day DX-camp. This event starts at Sunday 1100
am UTC and ends Monday 0100 am UTC. The place of our fieldday
is the club-house of Tennis-Club Duisburg-Neumuhl, in the
north of the city of Duisburg, which is approx. 20 miles west
of Gelsenkirchen and the same distance north of Dusseldorf.

Now you may ask why we should do that. Here is the reason:

There is a growing number of DXers and shortwave listeners
who suffer from increasing electronic noise in their
receivers affected by computers, dimmers, tv-sets, cordless
telephones, central heatings, etc. This noise which is mostly
coming from the nearest neighbourhood makes it impossible to
listen to weak stations, and especially to your station. So
it happened to me last year, I had no chance at all to catch
your signals. So I asked other DXers and I was surprised to
hear, that there were a lot of
them who had the same problems.

Therefore we had the idea to offer a place where DXers can
come together, bring their receivers along, build their own
outdoor antennas, if they want, and enjoy listening without
any disturbances. Before and after your transmission there
will be enough time to sit together and talk about hobby
related things and exchange experiences (and drink a beer or
enjoy a soft-drink, of course) and have a look at the bands
what else is happening that day.

Originally we wanted to send an eMail to Derek Richards, but
we have learned from your web-site that eMails to this
address before the time of transmission will be ignored. We
regret this very much, but there is no possibility for us to
send an eMail from the place of our fieldday; and though if
we had a computer and a web connection there, we would not
use it, because every computer produces a certain amount of
electronic noise...

Please forward this mail to Derek Richards, with all our
greetings and best wishes to the staff and the listeners of
Radio St.Helena. We hope that your transmissions will be
successful and heard as good as it was last year. (by those
lucky people without any noise...)

These greetings come also from our umbrella-organization
"AGDX" and the german DX-magazine "weltweit horen" (which
means "world-wide-listening"). AGDX represents some 2000
german speaking DXers organized in seven clubs. Our
club "KWFR" is one of them with some 100 members mainly
residing in our above named federal country.

Our club's address is:
KWFR e.V.
Postfach 101555
D-45815 Gelsenkirchen
Germany
eMail: kwfr.ge@t-online.de

We look forward to tuning in to your transmission and we will
also send you our
reports with great pleasure.
Best wishes and greetings again
Ulrich Schnelle
(club secretary)

First the first time ever I am hearing your broadcast here on

Brooklyn New York.

The reception is quite good on my Icom R71-A, I use a 200
foot long wire antenna. We live about 15 miles south of the
city of Hilo. The weather is overcast, some rain. But,
conditions seem to be excellent. As I said, this is the
first time I have heard you after several years of trying.

Just heard a greeting to Barbara from someone in Hunstville

that Radio St Helena conducts the most sophisticated and
comprehensive interviews you'll hear anywhere in the

The "jamming" sound is found between 11100 and 11090 kHz

Greetings Derek,
Just wanted to let you know that I am enjoying
listening to your annual broadcast for the second year in a
row now. I am located just outside Atlanta, Georgia, in the
southeastern United States. I am a mechanical engineer on the
faculty at Georgia Tech, the engineering and science school
in Atlanta, and my wife is a human resources manager with an
insurance company. I am 30 years old now, and have been
listening to shortwave since 1978. Hearing your broadcasts
is definitely one of the more interesting experiences I have
had as a shortwave listener.

Your signal is approx. s-6 on the signal strength meter of
my Drake R8, using a 35 m random wire antenna. I should
mention that, in spite of the good signal strength, much of
your transmission requires careful attention to understand.
The audio seems "muddy". The interesting thing is that when
you have put a telephone caller on the air, the relayed
telephone audio is much more intelligible. This was
especially true at 1926 GMT, when you put
Tim Hendel on the air from Alabama. You might consider
asking your studio engineer to adjust his equalizer to reduce
the amount of bass in your microphone audio, and perhaps
increase intelligibility in this manner.

Best wishes,
Bob Lewallyn

Your signal strength is increasing by the minute here in
Toronto, Canada (where it has just begun to snow!). I have
been listening to your broadcast on 11092 SSB since 19:00 UTc
and am enjoying the broadcast as I have the past three times
you have been on the air. I am sorry that last year I didn't
send in my reception report as I would be eligible for a
three time special award. I would appreciate it if you would
confirm this year's report with a QSL card.

The signal is very good but there are some local "hams" here
that from time to time seem to think it is fun to override
your signal.

The local news at 20:03 was interesting as it gives us some
idea of the items that are of interest to the residents of
your island. News of the ship sailing time from Cardif, the
private member's bill for British citizenship of the
residents of St. Helena, and the ham operators being able to
contact 350 others last weekend helped bring home the "island
feeling" that I used to feel when I lived on the Pribilof
Islands of Alaska in the Bering Sea. There is something very
special that one gains by living on rather isolated islands!

The phone messages from the U.S., Germany and Pedro in Brazil
beginning at 20:12 where great and as soon as I finish this
I will be back to listening until the end of your broadcast.
How about twice a year? Good luck on the broadcast and I
will look forward to receiving a QSL card from you.

Hello Derek,
just a short note to say that you are received here in
Germany on Radio St. Helena Day 1997, 26 Oct. 1997. Since
19.04 UTC I am listening on 11092.5 kHz (upper side band).
Signal strength is fair, unfortunately, reception suffers
from some strange atmospheric noise which makes it at
times diffiuclt to follow your broadcast. The programme
segment about Cable & Wireless on St. Helena at 19.42 GMT was
clearly understandable, the local news between 20.03 and
20.10 GMT were next to unreadable. Nevertheless it is fun to
receive your signals here in northern Germany with my Sony
ICF 2001D. I also heard some of your transmissions in
previous years, and in my collection I have your QSL-cards
from 1996 (no. 254) and 1992 (no. 301). If I remember
correctly reception was best in 1996.

At 1900 your signal was very poor - SINPO of 24342, but I
could make out parts of the program. By 2000 UTC things were
much better - SINPO of 44444. By 2130 I was able to tune you

I like the program (better music this year) and hope you keep

Hello everyone,
Congratulations on your transmission this evening.
I could receive the first few minutes of the broadcast then
the interference drowned you out most of the time until 2125

I've even been out in the garden with the headphones on to
get away from the electrical interference etc from the house.
It's a good job no one can see me on this frosty night in the
Cotswolds, they would definitely think that I've finally
cracked !! I'm listening on a Sony ICF-SW7600 with its own

Greetings on St. Helen Day from New Mexico!

Just wanted to let you know that I have been listening to you
for nearly 2-hours and I am really enjoying this "once-a-
year" transmission. The signal is not terribly strong, but it
is clearly readable. I am using my amateur, vertical antenna
and I am hearing you without any QRM or QRN.

I tuned in just after 1900 and couldn't hear you, but the
signal started to come in about 1940. Switching to my
amateur vertical has helped.

You just announced the time as (?) before 10:00 GMT and then
went into "Up On The Roof". You then went into an interview
with an interview from a listener in Pennsylvania. He didn;t
seem to know too much about St. Helena. Your next call was
from a listener in Illinois.

If you get this in time, I would like to send greetings to
all of my friends with Cumbre DX. Good luck with the rest of
your broadcast.

I am having a great time listening to you.

Hello to everyone on St Helena!

I have been listening to the broadcast on my Grundig Satellit

website which mentioned it, and I must say it has been great
fun! As someone who lives in a city with millions of
inhabitants (Toronto, Canada) I must say that I would just
love to visit your island. I imagine it must be very peaceful
and pretty much crime and pollution free. A place where a man
or woman can really escape the stress of the modern world. Of
course as a Canadian any place warm would be great :>).

Well, that's about it, be well and good luck with reacquiring

Hello radio St-Helena,
here, 25 Km. south-West from capital Brussels, reception was
very good by the beginning at 19.00 UTC - SINPO 44433.
Unfortunately 5 minutes later fun was over when a buzzing
signal started appearing and making it very difficult
listening to your fine programm. My RX is a Kenwood R5000
and I have three antenna's :

25m. longwire in sloper, a dipol and a T2FD for 17 meterband.
Listening on the longwire gives me a constant signal 9+20 db
by this buzzing sound. By using the T2FD for 17mb. and by
using the notch filter and a noise filter on the audio I can
understand and copy your transmission in a readable way.
Obviously the american callers seem to have less problems
with this so called buzzer.

By the way, for me it is the first time I catch your
transmissions and I like them a lot. It is a damn pitty this
activity only pass one time a year but I guess that's what
making it a very special one!! Keep up the good work!!!

Hello!
I have been listening to your yearly broadcast to the world
on 11092.5 kHz! I have an ICOM IC-R71A shortwave
communications receiver, and I am using a random wire 3
meters long inside! I am from LaGrange, Illinois, USA,
which is a suburb of Chicago, Illinois.

I heard your first broadcast back in 1993, and have a QSL
card from then. I would love to get another one for this
broadcast. I have taped the broadcast to cassette. The
first hour, 1900 UTC was weak, but you signal improved, and
it is fading now as I type this at approximately 2140 UTC.

Did you know that at 1700 UTC, a pirate station pretending to
be terrorists broadcast on 11092.5 kHz and calling themselves
the 26th of October, were broadcasting? They mentioned Andy
Sennett of the WRTH. They also gave a Providence, Rhode
Island address, which is a popular pirate mail drop here in
the states.

I heard many callers from the USA, Canada, the UK, and a
gentleman from Sao Paulo, Brazil, call in.

Well, I sure would love to hear from you with a QSL. BTW, I
taped much of that pirate, and will send you a copy of their
broadcast if you like.

Thanks for doing these broadcasts. This is a great boon to
shortwave listeners!

across the bottom. The 1993 and 1994 QSLs list the address as
being in the Castle in Jamestown, while the 1996 QSL has it
at Pounceys. The call letters are different also... ZHH for
the '93 and '94 QSLs and ZD7RSD for the '96. All three were
verified on the back by Station manager Tony Leo.

Looking forward to hearing you again in '98.

Derek -
Greetings from Portland, Oregon, on the Northwest coast of
the USA! It was thrilling to hear Radio St. Helena after
weeks of waiting with my new AR7030+ receiver at the ready.

I listened periodically on 11,092.50 kHz from 1900 to 2300
UTC, but Radio St. Helena was only intelligible at my
location from about 2230 to program close. Before then, the
signal was just barely there. From time to time, I was able
hear the difference between voice and music, but nothing
understandable. After 2230 it was occasionally intelligble,
but only really clear for a few minutes before the main
program ended. In the last few minutes, I heard a letter or
an announcement read in German, followed by a fairwell in
English. Then I heard everyone say goodbye at the same time,
followed by:

"From Radio St. Helena, ...<fairwell or goodbye in the
noise>... and a very
good evening to you!"

After that there was a comment about a local program,
followed by a woman speaking in English, then the UK anthem,
and loss of signal at approximately 23:05UTC.

Thanks for a special shortware listening thrill.

Listening for you next year with a new antenna!

Hello Derek and all Saints:
I am happy to report reception of Radio St. Helena on Sunday,
October 26, 1997, from 1900 to 2300 UTC. The frequency was
11092.5 kHz on upper side band (as usual). At sign on,
signals were between 5-2 and 5-4; however, around 2030 the
signal was 5-6 for a short time! There was some co-channel
interference from a "buzzing sound" tone approximately 1.5
kHz. higher and some local static from thunderstorms which
were west of my location. I used an AOR 7030 receiver and
dipole antenna for reception of the broadcast.

The program was very nice with a good mix of St. Helena
information, phone call in, and music. I enjoyed hearing
Tony Leo join you at 2103 UTC to talk about the origin of
Radio St. Helena Day and also the phone interview with John
Ekwall and Lennart Deimert in Sweden at 2144 UTC. I also
enjoyed hearing a local song, "Beautiful St. Helena Island"
by Eric George at 2253 UTC.

Anyway, congratulations Derek and to all the Saints on Radio
St. Helena Day! I always look forward to the 4 hour
broadcast from St. Helena on this day and look forward to
hearing next years broadcast on October 24, 1998!

Dear Sir:
Your transmission today was clearly heard here in San Juan
Puerto Rico at 21:54UT and after that. Several interviews
with US mainland listeners were clearly heard. I utilized an
R390 Collins receiver with a 75ft long wire antenna. The BFO
was used to tune your signal.Your frequency was 11092KC on my
mechanical tuning counter. It was a very enjoyable and unique
experience for which I thank you very much. I hope that you
repeat it next year.

Subject: WONDERFUL RECEPTION of RADIO ST HELENA IN NEW
ZEALAND

Congratulations to all involved at Radio St Helena (and the
guys at SATTS in Sweden) for a great broadcast earlier today.

Together with BARRY WILLIAMS, ARTHUR DE MAINE, IVOR WILLIAMS
and PAUL WELLS-GREEN, I was thrilled at the best-ever 'down
under' reception of your station.

Barry and Ivor put up a 468 foot longwire running north-
south, at Green Bay on the shores of Auckland's Manukau
Harbour. Using a Drake R-8 receiver running off a 12v car
battery, we had good readability from 1900 UTC past 1930 UTC.
Reception seemed to improve over this time. At 1935 UTC, I
telephoned my son at home in Mission Bay, 30km across
Auckland City and he confirmed there was audio on 11092.5 too
on my home set-up. When I arrived home at 2010 UTC, I could
still make out what was being talked about, courtesy my Icom
ICR-70 and 60 feet longwire antenna. Hopefully a good number
of NZ SWLs and DXers will have heard your broadcast -
certainly the best signal since they began.

I have a Radio St Helena QSL from the 1993 broadcast when
reception was very poor and fading. Today it was good and
steady with 95% readability.

It was great to speak briefly with Derek on air around 2030
UTC and I 'll pass on details of Derek's wish to make a NZ
ham contact next Sunday.

Best regards from NZ and all the membership of the NZ Radio
DX League.

Reception into Napier, New Zealand for the St Helena Day

They even managed to say hello to me and a friend, after we
phoned them at approx 19.15 utc. Reception here was fair at

20.00 utc.

I have already faxed a report to them, and will snail-mail

Hi Derek,
I choose to stay at home & tune in St Helena, whilst Bryan
Clark, Ivor & Barry Williams & Arthur de Maine, received your
signal at Green Bay, Auckland. Fair signal from home here in
Massey, urban Auckland, appprox. 20kms from the dx spot at
Green Bay. We compared signals by cellphone, all agreed, that
this years broadcast was better than last years.

My setup here at home was: Drake SW8 fed by a 40' (foot)
vertical, with more clarity than the 340' (foot) longwire.
Reasonable readabilty.

Will send my reception report by airmail of the reception
details, short, but to the point.

Hi friends,
with this eMail we send you a first information that there
was a loud jamming station on the St.Helena-frequency, not
only during your transmission, but also much earlier from
early afternoon. The jammer sounded like the ancient soviet
jammers contra liberty, voa, etc. and it is definetly sure
that it was not a local electric noise or something else
like that, because it was confirmed by other listeners at
distant places. It became something weaker just around 1900
UTC so we could listen to your station and of course listen
to the greetings to the "dx-club in Gelsenkirchen". At around
2010 UTC the jamming became stronger again, and some 90
minutes before planned close-down it was almost impossible to
listen. This was a first information, a detailed reception
report will follow soon.

Thanks a lot,

I am a serving police officer, with 22 years service in. I
currently work in the emergency control room located at PHQ,

As I said, it was really nice to meet Lawson, so it was a
shock when you told me he had retired, sounds political to
me, because he did not give me the imtression he was retiring
when I met him.

I have two daughters, Emma, 23 yrs, and Julie, 21 yrs (on new

doing international law, and Julie environmental resource and
management. Don't worry, they never got their intellect from
me, it was from Danielle!!

Jim, G3BRR sends his best wishes, and we both hope to work
you again this Wednesday at 1900 gmt. The UK have just
re-adjusted back to gmt from bst last Saturday. Derek, I will
try and call you from our club station Wednesday, if it does

Hope you have the QSL card by now, we sent it the next day.

Good day Lennart,

I tuned in to the station yesterday, and reception was strong
but not so clear due to interference. Sadly I live in an
apartment building and listen on a little Grundig YB400, so
reception isn't optimal during the best of times. It seemed
to me, however, that the phone callers and hams came in
clearer than the radio host/presenter.

Write soon and take care.

you transmission. I just tuned in 11092.5 kHz USB and hear
your transmission. The signal is weak with a lot of static.
Sinpo 34242. I hear you talking but can barely understand
it. It now 20:20 GMT and your talking about frequencies and
I thought I heard BBC. You are talking to someone who just
dialed in and at 20:39 some music played and a female
announcer talked for a few seconds. The male came back and
spoke about Radio St Helena. The women continued talking
about the island

I've collected QSL'S for years and if possible would
greatly appreciate one for
this receiption. Thanks for you help.

Hi everybody,
nice to see Radio St.Helena again on shortwave this year.
Reception conds seems to be good, but unfortunately there is
an unmodulated AM carrier on exactly the same frequency,
which remember on heavy jamming !
Due the antenna direction I checked, the jamming signal must
come from somewhere in eastern Europe.
It`s an idiot jamming your station and I feel very very sad
about the very very difficult reception under the terrible
jamming noise. That jamming guy isn`t worth to be a radio
freak !
Nice to hear some the signal can be heard somewhere with
better audio quality, well - I can listen to some parts of
the programme but not worth to send in a reception report at
all. So I really hope the conds will hold on a while and the
jammer is over until 23.00 UTC, actually it is 21.30 UTC !
73`s to everybody at Radio St.Helena and around the listening
audience thru out the world !

Strong signal S5 but there is an adjacent stronger signal
which is blocking yours and making out what is being said is
an almost impossible task. Very disappointing. Best of luck
though and I look forward to trying again next

The first 45 minutes was good burt finally faded out around
2000.
However, it is now 2230 and I am beginning to hear a faint
signal again, hpefully it will be better soon.
My receiver is an Icom R71-A with a 200 foot wire antenna.

As a shortwave listener for a long time I hear your
transmission for the first time. I am very impressed
receiving the program at 11092,5 in USB. My receiver is a
Drake R8A connected to a 20 m longwire antenna. Your signal
is weak with S=2, heavy interference by a jammer (?) I=2,
little noise N=5, propagation P= 3 and O=2. Due to jamming I
only kept informations about the location of your island in
the the South Atlantic, some telephone interviews and music.
Many greetings to you from Northern Germany near Bremen. I
would greatly appreciate receiving a QSL card from you. My

I just stood for "God Save the Queen"...a most noble
anthem....and the program for this year ended. I am sad,
because your broadcast is what SW BCasting should
be.....informative, interesting, and, you have proved again
that a station doesn't have to have 1Megawatt to be heard
around the world. A great job. Here in Md, your signal was
S9 about 1 hour prior to
closing, and was easily heard even tho there was some FDM
interference slightly off your freq of 11092.5. Keep up the
good work......John and Tony, and particularly Vanessa,
deserves all of the listeners/callers thanks...And boy..that
Vanessa is a
knockout!!!

Until next year.

Good Luck

I can't say enough how thrilled I was to hear almost all four
hours of your broadcast today. . . and my call even managed
to get through to Derrick!!! All of the the excitement and
thrills, that I first experienced as a beginning SWL at 16
years of age in Autumn 1983, were recaptured today. Whan an
enjoyable Sunday afternoon Radio St. Helena gave me! Thank
you so much. In this age of the Internet and computers, at
times it seems as if everyone is abandoning SW radio. Or, it
seems as if all of the main players are attempting to sound
just like strictly formated American radio (in the USA).
Ugh! Radio St. Helena has proven that an international
station need not have a signal of 1000kW to get the signal
out or sound just like almost all radio stations in the USA
to be interesting and even. . . yes, I think FUN is the right
word. My only regret is that your signal is not available
during the rest of the year. Please keep up the good work
and I will certainly try my best t!
o hear your signal again next year. All my best to Derrick
and the rest of the Radio St. Helena staff.

I listened periodically on 11,092.50 kHz from 1900 to 2300
UTC using my AR7030+ and DX-Ultra multiband dipole. Radio St.
Helena was only intelligible at my location from about 2230
to program close. I heard no jamming at any time. After 2230
it was occasionally intelligble, but only really clear for a
few minutes before the main program ended. In that brief
moment, I heard a letter or an announcement read in German,
followed by a fairwell in English. Then I heard everyone say
goodbye at the same time, followed by: "From Radio St.
Helena, ...... and a very good evening to you!" After that
there was a comment about a local program, followed by a
woman speaking in English, then the UK anthem, and loss of
signal at approximately 23:05UTC.

Thanks for a great listening experience! Hope to hear you
next year!

My first catch of your program since I got back into SWLing
after a 10 year absence. I was impressed by how
interactive the broadcast was, listened right from 19:00
up to 23:00. Heard some fellow ODXAers. I never expected
to hear two callers from the Toronto area right in a row.
It was amazing to hear how well the signal was copied
throughout the world. Very interactive and real time.

The broadcast was at 2pm EST here, and I didn't think I
would catch it being 9 floors off the ground in the midst
of one of Canada's largest urban centres. I had to shut
off pretty much every electrical device to cut the noise.
Reception was fair at first but using a DSP I cleaned up
the audio and was able to receive the broadcast quite well
near the end of the broadcast. There was an annoying
hetrodyne present for the last hour.

At any rate, I hope the tradition continues. This event
is what shortwave radio is all about. Your program really
highlights the "global" aspect of shortwave radio. The
internet is global but there is no challenge to it. I
spent over an hour fine tuning my SW55 to get a better
signal, plus fiddled with my antenna tuner, grounds and
had to unplug every power adapter I had. It was worth it.

I Hope to hear you next year, I will be looking out for it.

Reception into Napier, New Zealand for the St Helena Day
Broadcast was the best yet at 19.00 with opening etc.
They even managed to say hello to me and a friend, after we
phoned them at approx 19.15 utc.
Reception here was fair at start fading to poor at around
19.45, then lost just after 20.00 utc.

I have already faxed a report to them, and will snail-mail
one tomorrow
as well.

My first try at listening to Radio St. Helena. Had quite
a problem trying to copy the signal here in Kansas City.
My antenna setup leaves a lot to be desired. I'm in a
3rd floor apartment with two wire antennas running along
the ceiling and another up in the attic. Only I heard at
the 1900Z start-up was the time beeps. At around 1945,
signal became audible and gradually inproved until I could
begin to copy what was being said about 50 percent of the
time by about 2015. Did get the three questions but only
know the answer to two of them...hi. At about 2132, heavy
local QRM came up and I could no long understand the
broadcast. Did tape all four hours of the broadcast but
haven't played back all of the tape as yet. It does sound
fairly decent during the 2020Z to 2130Z period. My thanks
to all for a real challenge and opportunity to test out
my limited setup. Hope to be back next year with a better
arrangement. Mac, KR0I, Kansas City, MO, USA

Dear friends of Radio St. Helena!! For the first
time in my life I managed to tune in to Radio St.
Helena annual broadcast!! Unfortunatelly there was
some rain here and due to that there was some
interference caused by electrical discharges. But I
could listen to the first 50 minutes without problems.
I have already prepared my reception report.
I would like to send my congratulations to all the
staff of Radio St. Helena to allow us to listen
to this small island in the South Atlantic Ocean.
